Why roller derby? Bonnie D. Stroir pretty much sums it up when she says, "Most seem to find roller derby in transitional periods. We ruin our bodies to save our souls and for some reason that makes perfect sense." For me, it does. I found derby when I was going through a really rough time in my life. I also was in a new state and didn't know any one. Derby allowed me an outlet where I felt accepted and loved for who I was--no questions asked--and where I could have a moment to think about nothing else but skating. It allowed me to grow in confidence and made me want to better myself and my body, as an athlete (I never thought I would call myself that). The things I have achieved, the friends I have made, the confidence and happiness I have acquired, and the struggles on and off the track I have endured only to come out stronger are some of best gifts this wonderful empowering sport has given me. Roller derby truly saved my soul.
